UOB appoints Wee Ee Cheong as chief executive officer

United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) is pleased to announce that Mr Wee Ee Cheong has succeeded Mr Wee Cho Yaw as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the UOB Group with immediate effect.

Mr Wee Cho Yaw remains Group Chairman. This management succession was announced by the Chairman at the conclusion of UOB’s annual general meeting today.

HSBC arranges US$210 million syndicated loan facility for Bank of Ceylon

HSBC has announced the successful completion of a US$210 million three-year syndicated loan facility for Bank of Ceylon, the No.1 Bank in Sri Lanka by assets. The facility establishes a new benchmark for the offshore syndicated loan market for Sri Lanka, as it is the largest syndicated loan for a Sri Lankan entity.

Philip Lipton, Managing Director, Head of Loan Syndicate and Distribution, Asia Pacific said: “The success of this loan syndication epitomises the resourcefulness of HSBC in being able to draw on international expertise and reach to attract international investors to Sri Lanka at very competitive pricing.” Strong loan demand allowed for an increase in the size from the original US$100 million to US$210 million and pricing with a margin of just 0.50 per cent over three-month US$ Libor.

Hong Kong Monetary Authority publishes annual report 2006

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today (Friday) published its Annual Report for 2006. The Report reviews trends and events in monetary and banking affairs and reports on the HKMA’s work during the year. It also sets out plans for the coming year.

Mr Joseph Yam, Chief Executive of the HKMA, said in his statement in the Annual Report that the exchange and money markets had continued to be stable throughout the year despite record fund flows related to initial public offerings and speculation about the effect on the Hong Kong dollar of the renminbi’s appreciation.

Deutsche Bank names head of financial sponsors, Asia-Pacific

Deutsche Bank announced it has appointed Angus Barker as Managing Director, Head of Financial Sponsors, Asia Pacific. Mr Barker will be based in Hong Kong and report jointly to Lee Zhang, Head of Global Banking Asia Pacific (ex Japan), and to Mark Epley, Global Head of Financial Sponsors.

Lee Zhang said: “Angus has a breadth of experience that will be valued by new and existing clients, whose advisory and funding needs are become increasingly diverse.” Mark Epley said: “Growth in Asia continues to exceed expectations and Angus’s expertise will add further depth to our Financial Sponsors platform in this important growth market.” Mr Barker joins from UBS where he was Head of Financial Sponsors for Non-Japan Asia and formerly Head of M&A, Non-Japan Asia.

SIXTIETH WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY GUIDELINES AND INFORMATION FOR MEDIA

The sixtieth World Health Assembly (WHA) will take place from 14-23 May 2007 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. The WHA is the annual meeting of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 193 Member States. Issues to be discussed include:  Avian and pandemic influenza (developments, response and follow-up) and the application of the International Health Regulations; Smallpox eradication: destruction of variola virus stocks; Malaria, including proposal for establishment of Malaria Day; Tuberculosis control: progress and long-term planning; Prevention and Control of noncommunicable diseases: implementation of the global strategy; Integrating gender analysis and actions into the work of  WHO; Workers’ Health: draft global plan of action and Better Medicines for Children;  and Progress in the rational use of medicines.

WHO calls for prevention of cancer through healthy workplaces

Every year, at least 200 000 people die from cancer related to their workplace, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Saturday is World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Millions of workers run the risk of developing cancers such as lung cancer and mesothelioma (a malignant cancer of the internal lining of the chest cavity) from inhaling asbestos fibres and from tobacco smoke, or leukemia from exposure to benzene at their workplaces.

Government of Vietnam Extends MoU with SICPA for Deployment of ‘VIETRACE(TM) ANTI SMUGGLING & TAX ENHANCEMENT’ Program in 2007

Inter-ministerial body, Central Committee 127 (CC127), of the Government of Vietnam has extended its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SICPA ProductSecurity SA (SICPA) to research and deploy solutions against counterfeiting and illicit trade in Vietnam.The new agreement is the result of a detailed research and consultation process between SICPA and the Government of Vietnam which was defined in theinitial MoU signed between the parties last year on February 20, 2006.
